October 27, 2009 Industrial Focus Luncheon
Automation and Robotics
DCEDC welcomed Dean Panettieri, Auto Meter Products, Inc; Scott
Gilmore, Smart Motion Robotics, Inc; and Sam Walt, WALT LTD as
speakers at the annual Industrial Focus Luncheon Program.
Each presenter talked about their company history, products they
manufacture, their markets and most particularly about how they
employ automation and robotics in their business.
An amusing overview of the development of robots as well as a
look at the multiplicity of ways they are employed was an eye-opening
experience for the audience. Defined as a device that has control
over itself and operates autonomously, robots are typically used
to fill hazardous jobs, ensure workplace safety and to "do
the jobs that people do not want to do". Automation in the
workplace ensures consistency in quality, reduces injuries due
to repetitive motion and results in improved productivity.
